Energy sector consumption lags in Apr-Dec 2020

Demand for energy in India showed a mixed trend in December 2020. Electricity generation was down by 4.7 per cent in April-December 2020 compared to the same period last year.

Gross electricity generation via coal declined by 6.3 % in April-December 2020 compared to last year's levels.

Petroleum product consumption has declined by 13 per cent in April-December 2020 due to economic inactivity.

Demand for diesel has been hit hard this fiscal year. Diesel consumption has been weak because of shift in goods transport away from road in favour of railway freight.

Petrol consumption in April-December 2020 declined by nearly 12 per cent compared to the same period last year. It grew by 8.4 per cent in April-December 2019 on a YoY basis.

Consumption of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) declined by 48 per cent in the first half of January 2021. It dropped by 61 per cent in April-December 2020 compared to the same period last year.
