India's smartphone market may soon have a new leader

India's mobile market, which is currently the second biggest in the world after China, is set to reach Rs 25,280 core by 2023. The industry has a lot of competition in terms of features offered by the manufacturers and the prices at which these products are offered. The industry is currently led by Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi followed by South Korean major Samsung. Apart from Samsung, four out of the top five positions in Indian smartphone industry are held by Chinese firms.

According to IDC, bulk of the sales (80%) came from under Rs 14,000 phones in Q3 2019. The phones that are priced between Rs 14,000 and Rs 35,000 account for 18.9% of the total sales while phones priced more than Rs 35,000 account for only 1.1% of the total sales.

Xiaomi is the leader in India with a market share of 27.1% till Q3 of the current year. The market share of Xiaomi has seen a dip in the last year from 27.3% in Q3 2018 to 27.1% till Q3 2019. Total shipments of Xiaomi have seen a growth of 8.5 per cent in the same time frame.

Samsung is the second most selling smartphone brand in India, as per the IDC's quarterly mobile phone tracker. Samsung has a market share of 18.9 per cent in the Indian smartphone market. Samsung's market share  has decreased from 22.6 per cent in Q3 of 2018 to 18.9 per cent in Q3 of 2019. The total shipments of Samsung have also seen a dip of 8.5 per cent in the same time frame.

Vivo stood at the third place in the Indian smartphone market. Vivo is also a Chinese manufacturer. Vivo has displayed a stellar performance by gaining a major chunk of the Indian smartphone market. Its market share has grown from 10.5 per cent in Q3 of 2018 to 15.2 per cent in Q3 of 2019. Vivo has also seen a sharp uptick of 58.7 per cent in its units shipped in the same time frame, as per the IDC's Quarterly mobile phone tracker.

With 14.3 per cent market share, Realme has secured the fourth spot. Realme's market share in India has grown by more than 4 times in the last year. Realme's market share has risen to 14.3 per cent in Q3 2019 from a mere 3.1 per cent in Q3 of 2018. The units shipped by Realme has seen an astronomical growth of 401 per cent in the same time frame, as per data collated by IDC.

Oppo which is also a Chinese manufacturer was the fifth most selling smartphone brand in India. Oppo held 11.8 per cent market share in the Indian smartphone market as of Q3 2019. Oppo's market share has seen an improvement from 6.7 per cent reported in Q3 of 2018. Oppo has seen a rise of 92 per cent in its total units shipped.
