As the Indian government prepares a mega infrastructure upgrade for Lakshadweep as part of its larger plan to develop the islands as a tourism hub, there are reports that a new airport is being planned on the Minicoy island. The new airport will overcome one of the biggest handicaps of the Arabian Sea islands, the inability of the current airport to handle large or even medium-sized aircraft. The new airport is likely to include water runways and infrastructure to handle boat traffic to connect to other islands of the union territory. The proposed airport will also be able to handle military flights and keep an eye on the strategically crucial Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean region.
