A magnitude-6.2 earthquake jolted north-western China on Monday night, killing at least 118 people and injuring hundreds. The epicentre was in the Jishishan county, a remote and mountainous county on the northern edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. Sub-zero temperatures in the area are hindering rescue efforts. Thousands of homes have been either been damaged or have collapsed, while power and communication lines were disrupted.
