The government is likely to appoint vice-chairman of the Niti Aayog Arvind Panagariya as the next RBI governor. Here are five things to know about Raghuram Rajan's successor at RBI.
An economist from the Columbia University, Panagariya was appointed the vice chairman of the Niti Aayog on January 5, 2015. PM Modi is chairman of the panel.
India-born Panagariya, a native of Rajasthan, holds a PhD from Princeton University and has served as a Professor of Economics and the Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in New York.
In the past, Panagariya has served as chief economist of the Asian Development Bank. He has also worked for the World Bank, IMF, WTO and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in various capacities. He is an expert in international trade.
In March 2012, the government honoured Panagariya with Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian honour the country bestows in any field.
Panagariya,63, was born to Balu Lal Panagriya and Mohan Kumari in Rajasthan on 30 September 1952.
