At $450.3 million (Rs 2,940 crore), Leonardo da Vinci's 15th century artwork titled Salvator Mundi (Saviour of the World) has become the talk of the planet for being the most expensive painting sold via auction.

At $450.3 million (Rs 2,940 crore), Leonardo da Vinci's 15th century artwork titled Salvator Mundi (Saviour of the World) has become the talk of the planet for being the most expensive painting sold via auction. But what does it mean? Measuring 45cmx66cm, it works out to $151,617 (Rs 99 lakh) per square centimetre $127.5 million (Rs 833 crore) was what it was bought for, in 2013 37% average annual price appreciation or CAGR in 4 years 12% annualised average return on the BSE Sensex in the same period Vinci's Mona Lisa, which is not for sale, is estimated to be worth $790 million (Rs 5,159 crore)-based on the $100 million (Rs 75 crore in 1962) transit insurance cover purchased in 1962. So, where does that leave 20th century's greatest artist Pablo Picasso? Very, very far behind, it seems - his Women of Algiers, sold in 2015, held the record till now for the most expensive painting ever sold via an auction, for $179.4 million (Rs 1,172 crore).
