The iphone 15 plus may seem similar to its predecessor, but a closer look reveals a more premium fit and finish, thanks to some tweaks. The edges of the aluminium frame have been rounded off slightly, making it comfortable to hold. And Apple’s new colour-infused glass rear in matte, replacing the glossy glass, makes the back look premium, and very similar to the Pro models.

The phone has the same 6.7-inch OLED screen from last year, but what enhances its appeal is the inclusion of Apple’s Dynamic Island—that made its debut on the Pro models last year—instead of the notch. Overall, the display’s brightness, colour reproduction and viewing angles are great. And with peak brightness of 2,000 nits, sunlight legibility gets a big boost. But there are two misses: the phone still lacks the Always-on Display to quickly check notifications on the lock screen; and two, the screen’s refresh rate is still stuck at 60Hz.

What could be a deal-breaker though is the main camera—the new 48MP camera sensor that captures bright and vibrant images at 24MP resolution. The ultra-wide camera remains unchanged. While it lacks a telephoto lens, Apple has introduced a crop zoom that focusses on the centre rectangle of the sensor and captures a 12MP image, giving results very similar to optical zoom.

Apple has picked up the A16 Bionic chip from the iPhone 14 Pro line-up, which makes the iPhone 15 Plus powerful enough to handle not just graphic-heavy gaming, but also edit videos on the go. Plus, the braided USB-C cable in the box feels durable. Battery backup is impressive as well—I still had 37 per cent charge left at 10 pm after a rather hectic day.

Whether you’re a first-time user, or looking for an upgrade from older iterations, the iPhone 15 Plus offers a compelling array of new features and improvements, making it a strong contender.
