After being inducted in the Wassenaar Arrangement Export Control Regime, India is set to seek membership of Australia Group as well. This is an informal group of countries that works to harmonise controls to ensure that export of critical chemicals doesn't lead to development of chemical or biological weapons.
If India applies, the candidature will be discussed at the next plenary to be held in Paris from June 4-8 2008. The move comes after India became a member of the Missile Technology Control Regime and the Wassenaar Arrangement. The membership of these influential groups will allow India to bargain for entry into the Nuclear Suppliers' Group that China has been blocking.
