The year 2017 has not been very kind to Bollywood. The Hindi film industry rolled out some ambitious projects and some that were much-awaited. However, quite a few of them met the same fate - didn't create any buzz and didn't last long in the memories of the audience. There were also quite a few big commercial films that did not even recover their budget amount. Like most years, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan had big releases this year as well. Although these movies, Raees, Jab Harry Met Sejal and Tubelight recovered their budget without much effort, they were big disappointments in terms of audience and critics' reaction. The year saw a movie each by Vidya Balan, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, Farhan Akhtar, two each by Shah Rukh Khan and Kangana Ranaut - none of which were either blockbuster or critical hits.

Here's a look back into the year and some of the most disappointing Bollywood movies of 2017, in no particular order: 1. Noor: What was set to be a lively comedy-drama based on Saba Imtiaz's 'Karachi, You're Killing Me' turned out to be one of the most disastrous movies of the year. Made on a budget of roughly Rs 24 crore, this Sonakshi Sinha-starrer only recovered an estimated Rs 11 crore. Not only that, critics unanimously panned the movie, making sure Noor would leave no trace on the box office.

2. Begum Jaan: Srijit Mukherjee's movie was expected to unleash Vidya Balan's 'Dirty Picture' magic, but ended up being a squib. The trailer was received positively but the actual movie barely recovered its budget. Begum Jaan was made on a budget of an estimated amount of Rs 19 crore and made an estimated Rs 20.68 crore.  3. Jagga Jasoos: While the jury is still out on this Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif starrer, box office tells a different story altogether. Jagga Jasoos was made by Anurag Basu on a budget of Rs 131 crore but the movie only recovered an estimated Rs 83.35 crore. The movie is a visual feast, with dialogues rolling out in rhyme and a detective who deserves to be every child's hero but none of that could save Jagga Jasoos from sinking. 4. Rangoon: A movie helmed by Vishal Bharadwaj, with Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan in the lead - could anything go wrong? But box office proved to be a great leveller and before anyone could tell, Rangoon was out of the theatres. The movie was made on a budget of Rs 80 crore and a large portion of the movie was shot in Arunachal Pradesh. Despite everything going for it Rangoon at the best only managed mixed reviews and recovered only Rs 41 crore.

5. Haseena Parkar: Even before the release of the movie, Haseena Parkar had made headlines because of the unusual casting of Shraddha Kapoor in the lead role of Dawood Ibrahim's sister, Haseena Parkar. However, so disastrous was the performance of the movie that nobody noticed when it released and when it left the theatres. Apoorva Lakhia's movie made only Rs 12.65 crore in the box office.

6. Raabta: This movie too made headlines because of its reincarnation plot, and received mixed reviews upon its release. But it could not set the cash registers ringing and sank without a trace. Raabta was made on a budget of roughly Rs 33 crore but ended up recovering only Rs 25 crore. The movie stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Kriti Sanon and Jim Sarbh.

7. Sarkar 3: The third instalment of political thriller, Sarkar, only managed to earn an estimated Rs 12.10 crore worldwide in seven days. Ram Gopal Verma's Sarkar was a superhit in the box office and the second installation also fared quite well in the box office. Both the movies were critically appreciated as well. Hence the performance of the third part was one of the biggest disappointments of the year. 8. Lucknow Central: Farhan Akhtar's latest movie barely managed to recover its cost. Lucknow Central was made on an estimated budget of Rs 30 crore and managed to make an estimated Rs 30 crore. However, the movie's release clashed with Kangana Ranaut's Simran that had been making headlines since well before its release date. Lucknow Central also stars Diana Penty and Deepak Dobriyal.

9. Simran: Kangana Ranaut's latest offering was expected to be the movie that would break Bollywood's streak of poor performance. Embroiled in multiple controversies, the movie was already making headlines. To top it all, with Hansal Mehta at the helm and Kangana Ranaut as the lead actor, the movie was expected to be failsafe. But, alas! Simran was released at the same time as Lucknow Central and overshadowed it in all fronts. However, in the box office front, both were at par. Simran was made at an estimated budget of Rs 30 crore and managed to recover around Rs 29 crore.

Special mention: Although Jab Harry Met Sejal, recovered much more than its budget, it could easily act as the face of Bollywood's year in 2017 - big production, starring A-listers but absolute disappointments. Jab Harry Met Sejal is also one of Shah Rukh Khan's lowest opening movies ever.
