Jamling Tenzing
Norgay
He is the son of Nepalese Sherpa mountain climber Tenzing Norgay (who first climbed Mount Everest in 1953 with Sir Edmund Hillary). He has not only learned from his father’s legacy, but actually added to it.
Jamling Tenzing Norgay summited Mount Everest in 1996, just two weeks after nine people died in the mountains most deadly storm ever recorded. Not only did he make it to the top of the world's most forbidding mountain - described by the Sherpa people as "The Mother Goddess of the World" - but he also helped capture it all on film. As the star of Director David Breashears Imax film ''Everest'', Jamling helped to portray not only the physical challenges of the Mountain, but also the mental and spiritual challenges faced by the climbers.
In 2001, Jamling completed a book that went even further. ‘Touching my Father’s Soul; In the Footsteps of Tenzing Norgay’, written with Broughton Coburn, is not only a detailed chronicle of the 1996 climb, but outlines Jamling’s inner journey reflecting on his father’s experience and his own balance between western culture and Sherpa tradition. The book has been released in 18 languages since then.
Interestingly, in 2002, Jamling was featured along with Edmund Hillary’s son Peter, in a National Geographic film called ‘Suriving Everest’, about the sons of Everest summiteers.
For his bravery, Jamling received His Holiness The Dalai Lama's Award, as well as the National Citizen's award from the President of India. Jamling is the tenth person in the Norgay family to stand at the top of the world.
Today Jamling runs his adventure travel company "Tenzing Norgay Adventures"
He also continues his involvement with the "Tenzing Norgay Climbing Club" that he started in 1997 to help the kids off the streets. He is married and has three daughters.
When he is not guiding he travels around the world doing lectures as a motivational speaker to a variety of Groups, Corporations and Universities.
Jamling is often asked whether there are more big summits in his future and he says "I promised my wife that after Everest, I would never climb again, and I will not break my word.''
