At the India Today Conclave 2024 in Mumbai, Business Today Editor Sourav Majumdar hosted a thought-provoking discussion with Navneet Munot, MD & CEO of HDFC Asset Management Company and Chairman of AMFI. The conversation revolved around the evolution of India’s mutual fund industry and its significant impact on market dynamics. Navneet Munot highlighted how India's financial landscape has transformed across generations. He reflected on the shift from dependence on foreign aid and investments to a period where Indian retail investors, through instruments like SIPs (Systematic Investment Plans), are increasingly driving market growth. Munot underscored the growing power of domestic flows, citing that ₹23,000 crore is invested monthly through SIPs from over 10 million accounts. This trend, he stated, marks the structural financialisation of savings and digitisation of finance in India, contributing to long-term economic growth. However, Munot also expressed caution regarding certain areas of the market, such as SME IPOs, where some investors view them as instant profit opportunities rather than long-term investments. Despite these concerns, he emphasized that India's fundamentals remain robust, positioning the country for an economic miracle of historic proportions.
