Bajaj and Triumph have jointly produced and launched two new 400cc bikes Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X in the Indian market days after the launch of its direct rival Harley Davidson X440.
Bajaj Triumph Scrambler 400X, the new motorcycle from Triumph and Bajaj, gets a more rugged and off-road look with front headlight protection guards, knuckle guard and a raised handlebar. It also gets an all-black twin-can exhaust system along with a split seat.
Speed 400 gets a more street look with fuel tank graphic, dedicated sitting posture and even a different seat. Speed 400 has a single seat while Scrambler 400X gets a split seat. Bajaj Triumph Speed 400 has a single exhaust with aluminium finish.
Talking about the tyres, Scrambler 400X gets a 19-inch alloy in the front and a 17-inch alloy at the back along with a bigger 320mm disc brake at the front. On the other hand, Bajaj Triumph Speed 400 gets 17-inch alloys both in front and at the back with 300mm disc brakes.
Bajaj has even kept the paint job of its two launches slightly different. Bajaj Triumph Speed 400 is available in three colours – Phantom Black, Caspian Blue and Carnival Red. Bajaj Triumph Scrambler 400X is available in – Matt Khaki Green, Fusion White, Phantom Black, Carnival Red and Silver.
Both bikes from the partnership of Bajaj and Triumph are powered by a liquid-cooled 398cc single-cylinder engine which gives an output of 39.5 bhp and a peak torque of 37.5 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The motor is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with slip-and-assist clutch.
The direct rival of the Bajaj Triumph bikes is the recently launched Harley Davidson X440, which is the lightest and first sub-500cc bike from the American bike maker. The bike has been jointly built by Hero MotoCorp and Harley Davidson. The bike seems highly influenced by Harley’s XR1200 as it gets broad shoulders with wide handlebars and butch lines. The fit and finish of the bike is also being questioned as it seems that the company didn’t focus on minute details.
Harley Davidson X440 still gets a number of features including the segment-leading automatic LED lights, which turn on when there is a drop in ambient lighting. The other features include better connectivity options than other bikes in the segment but they are available only in higher variants.
X440 is the first bike from Harley Davidson with an engine smaller than 500cc. The new bike jointly made with Hero runs on a new air and oil-cooled 440cc engine, which gives an output of just 27 bhp. But the impressive thing is torque of 38 Nm, which reaches the peak at just 4,000 rpm. The engine is paired to a 6-speed gearbox with slip-and-assist clutch.
The ex-showroom prices of the newly launched bikes are: Harley Davidson X440 price: Starts at Rs 2.29 lakh Bajaj Triumph Speed 400: Starts at a discounted price of Rs 2.23 lakh for first 10,000 units, after that the price starts at Rs 2.33 lakh. Bajaj has not revealed the price of Scrambler 400X yet.
The other rivals of Bajaj Triumph Speed 400, Scrambler 400X and Harley Davidson X440, the three new sub-500cc segment bikes, include KTM Duke 390, Royal Enfield 350cc range, BMW G 310 GS, Bajaj Dominar and Jawa Yezdi.
