The automotive industry is rapidly transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs). There's a notable shift in public perception about climate change, and regulations to ban internal combustion engines are on the horizon. Concurrently, advancements in EV technology and charging infrastructure are evident. 

The EV Revolution

While numerous car manufacturers have established distant targets, a handful of automakers are striving to lead the way by committing to a complete transition to 100 per cent electric vehicles within the next 10 years.

The Change is Coming

Jaguar Land Rover's bold "Reimagine" strategy revealed an electrifying future for the company. Land Rover will introduce six new electric models within next five years, with the first arriving in 2024. Diesel engines will be phased out by 2026. Jaguar, even bolder, will go 100 per cent electric by 2025, possibly redefining market segments.

The British automaker, backed by China's Geely and Malaysia's Etika Automotive, aims to transition to an all-electric lineup by 2028. With Geely and Etika's financial support, Lotus aims to boost annual production from 1,500 cars to a global distribution of tens of thousands through dealerships and online sales. The company is also supposed to invest $2.8 billion for the transition and the cutting-edge technology it needs for development.

Bentley has said that it intends to completely transition from gasoline-powered vehicles to electric cars by 2030. This announcement took center stage during Bentley's "Beyond 100" virtual press conference held in 2020. According to Bentley's plan, by 2026, every new vehicle it offers will either be a plug-in hybrid or an electric model. Then, within four more years, the plug-in hybrids will be gradually phased out.

Cadillac’s parent company, General Motors (GM) has declared its intention to achieve a fully electric lineup by 2035, emphasising its commitment to the established timeline. However, internal discussions suggest that not all within the company are convinced of the feasibility of this swift transition. While GM remains steadfast in its desire to embrace electric vehicles exclusively, the possibility of postponing the 2035 target is being considered to avoid detrimental impacts on the company's business and potential losses.

Mercedes-Benz too has announced its plan to transition to an all-electric lineup by 2030, albeit with certain conditions. The German automaker's commitment to electric vehicles will be contingent on favourable market conditions. This suggests that in regions where consumer demand for EVs is lacking, Mercedes might continue to offer gasoline-powered vehicles even after 2030.

BMW Group has unveiled plans for Mini to transform into an entirely electric vehicle brand by 2030. Positioned as an optimal choice for electric mobility, Mini is slated to release its last combustion-engine model in 2025. Anticipating a significant shift, BMW aims for electric vehicles to make up at least half of all Mini deliveries by 2027.

Rolls-Royce has declared its intention to exclusively manufacture electric vehicles by 2030. The BMW-affiliated luxury automaker revealed plans for its inaugural fully electric model, named 'Spectre', to launch in Q4 2023, with testing commencing shortly.

In the coming years, Volvo Cars plans to introduce numerous more electric models. The company envisions a future where, by 2025, over 50 per cent sales will comprise fully electric cars, with the remaining being hybrids. Furthermore, Volvo aims to achieve a remarkable feat by 2030, having every vehicle it sells be fully electric.

Audi’s American division President Daniel Weissland has said that German automaker is targeting the end of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle production by 2033. Weissland stated they that have no intentions of introducing any new ICE vehicles after 2026. He also said that by 2033, Audi’s focus will be exclusively on electric vehicles.

Stellantis, the parent company of Alfa Romeo revealed in 2021 that Alfa Romeo will become fully electric by 2027. Known for its unique charm and enthusiastic appeal, Alfa Romeo has maintained a distinctive identity. This move to EV is remarkable given that the brand has been protective of its heritage, just like the Ferrari.
