Safety is one of the crucial elements that a customer checks out before buying a car. Recently, Verna became the first made-in-India car by Hyundai to receive a five-star rating from the Global NCAP, whereas a Mahindra car failed to get even a single star. Here’s a list from safest to least safe cars available in the Indian market.
The German automaker Volkswagen’s compact sedan, Virtus is the safest car in India. It received the highest possible five star ratings in both adult and child safety. Virtus scored 29.71 out of 34 points in adult safety and a score of 40 out 49 in child safety. Currently, the price of Volkswagen Virtus starts at Rs 11.48 lakh (ex-showroom).
Volkswagen Virtus’ technical cousin, Skoda Slavia also cruised through the Global NCAP crash test by scoring points similar to Virtus. Both German cars were also tested for pedestrian safety. Skoda Slavia price begins at Rs 10.89 lakh (ex-showroom).
The latest facelift of Hyundai Verna became the first made-in-India car of the Korean auto giant to receive a five-star rating from Global NCAP. Verna also got five stars in both adult and child safety tests. The compact sedan by Hyundai scored 28.18 out of 34 points in adult safety and 42 out of 49 in child safety tests. The ex-showroom price of the new Hyundai Verna starts from Rs 10.90 lakh.
The compact SUV duo from the German automaker have also received five-star ratings just like their sedan cousins. Both cars scored a total of 71.64 points to earn the highest possible rating. The price of Skoda Kushaq starts at Rs 10.89 lakh (ex-showroom) while Taigun is priced at Rs 11.62 lakh (ex-showroom).
Currently the safest car by Mahindra, the new Scorpio N scored a total of 58.18 points to earn a five star rating in the adult safety but only three-star rating in the child safety. The starting price of the new Scorpio N is Rs 13.26 lakh (ex-showroom).
One of the smallest SUVs in the Indian market, Tata Punch is also the safest car made by Tata Motors. The car earned a five-star in adult safety and a four star in child safety. But overall, the car scored 57.34 points to earn an overall five-star rating. Tata Punch’s starting ex-showroom price is Rs 6 lakh.
Mahindra XUV700, which was earlier the safest SUV of Mahindra, now sits behind the new Scorpio N with an overall score of 57.69 points. XUV700 got a five-star in adult safety and a four-star in child safety test. The starting price of Mahindra XUV700 is Rs 14.03 lakh (ex-showroom).
Now coming to the least safe cars in India, on the second last place comes the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, which offers just a single airbag for the driver. The car scored 0 out of 17 points in adult safety and 13.84 out of 49 points in child safety which ultimately earned it zero stars in both the tests and an overall zero-star rating. The starting ex-showroom price of Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is Rs 4.26 lakh.
The OG of Indian SUVs, Mahindra Scorpio Classic is surprisingly the least safe car of India with a score of zero points in adult safety and 16.73 out of 49 in child safety. The car was last tested in 2016 when it attained this rating. The Mahindra Scorpio Classic is priced at Rs 13.25 lakh (ex-showroom).
