The world’s fifth richest person* Bill Gates interviewed online education portal Khan Academy CEO Sal Khan in the latest episode of his podcast ‘Unconfuse Me’. Both discussed the use of AI technology in the education industry *As per Bloomberg Billionaires Index on Aug 16
While talking about AI chatbots, Bill Gates said that they will soon be able to offer helpful feedback on essays, including how to write with more clarity and make well-reasoned arguments.
The Microsoft Co-founder said that it will be a significant step for global education, as the current education software programmes are "not that great" at teaching, reading or writing skills
"Very few students get feedback [from software programs] on an essay that this could be clearer, you really skipped this piece and the reasoning. I do think the AI will be like a great high school teacher who really marks your essay, and you go back and think, 'OK, I need to step up there,’” said Bill Gates
Sal Khan talked about the existing AI-powered tools for education during his conversation with Bill Gates. He mentioned AI tutor Khanmigo, which is being developed by Khan Academy. It's powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT and also integrates the results of Microsoft's Bing search engine. It can "act like a fairly good human tutor”, as per Khan. He added that today's AI chatbots still make mistakes
“Khan Academy is also experimenting with using the tool to help facilitate student discussions, potentially providing "an army of teaching assistants for every teacher," Sal Khan added.
Apart from the serious questions, Bill Gates also posed a rather funny question to Sal. "Given a web search for Sal Khan might yield this gentleman," Gates said while displaying an image of Bollywood actor Salman Khan. He then asked Sal, "Do you ever get confused with Salman Khan?"
Sal Khan laughed at the question and said, "I do." He further shared an anecdote, "In the early days of Khan Academy, I received letters from some of (Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s) fans professing their affection and surprise that I possessed mathematical skills."
Amid the rise in online education portals, Bill Gates and Sal Khan also discussed how in-person teaching inside classrooms provides a social experience for students
