Large cap Indian IT players Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and Wipro are pushing for employees to return to office. The IT companies had switched to remote work during the pandemic.
TCS has asked employees to return to office five days a week. In October, an email sent by the CHRO Milind Lakkad reads, “We strongly believe that they need to come to work so that the new workforce gets integrated with the larger workforce of TCS. And that is the only way they will learn and understand and internalise the TCS values and the TCS way. So yes, we are asking people to come all days in a week."
K Krithivasan has taken over as the CEO of the IT company. The previous CEO, Rajesh Gopinathan, had introduced the 25-25-25 system, under which by 2025, employees would have to spend only 25 per cent of their time in office. Moreover, at any point, only 25 per cent of the company staff needs to be in office. The 25-25-25 policy was scrapped off by the new CEO.
Infosys has asked employees in entry to mid-level roles to return to the office for 10 days a month. The company sent an email to employees in the first week of November.
Interestingly, during the earnings call CEO Salil Parekh noted that the IT company promotes flexible working for its employees. He said, “In general, our view is we want to support this flexible approach. It’s something that we believe is appropriate given how we’ve set up the work-from-home infrastructure.”
Wipro has informed employees that it is implementing a compulsory hybrid work policy starting November 15, where staffers have to be present in the office at least three days a week. The company also said that action would be taken against employees who do not comply with the new rules.
Wipro's Chief Human Resources Officer Saurabh Govil wrote to employees in an email, "Starting November 15, all employees must be present at their assigned office location for at least three days each week. This change aims to enhance teamwork, facilitate face-to-face interactions, and strengthen Wipro's culture.”
The recent developments hint towards the Indian IT sector phasing out remote work and bringing employees back to offices. This comes at a time when major IT players are trying to reduce inefficiencies and focus on improving employee utilisation.
