The world is betting big on semiconductors, be it its consumption or manufacturing, the demand will only go up in the future. This surge in demand could also lead to a shortage of talent in the semiconductor ecosystem. In light of this, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, MoS, Electronics & IT, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, shared insights on the opportunities and challenges in the semiconductor industry during a conversation with BTTV Managing Editor Siddharth Zarabi at BT Best B-Schools & HR Summit 2023
MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar spoke of coping with the shortage of talent in the semiconductor industry, which will be there in the future as manufacturing is one of the most important aspects of the semiconductor ecosystem. He said that the announcements by Micron, Lam Research and Applied Materials during PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the US will create over 80,000 jobs in the semiconductor ecosystem
“Out of these 80,000 jobs, in my opinion, 65,000-75,000 will be clearly high capability jobs which are global standard jobs, whether they are VLSI characterisation, quality, manufacturing or process,” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar at BT B-School Submit
MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar also talked about how the government is building a research facility in Mohali, aimed towards the expansion of the semiconductor ecosystem in the country
“The trend line for the semiconductor ecosystem is very sharp and is a positive slope, and the momentum will continue for coming years,” says Rajeev Chandrasekhar
Rajeev Chandrasekhar also said that the accelerated growth of the semiconductor ecosystem being seen today is a consequence of the hard work put in by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the years
Talking about India’s electronic production, MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that 82 to 85% of all the mobile phones that we used to use were imported in 2014, but today 100% of the mobile phones consumed in India are made and assembled in India by world-class factories that have created 12 lakh jobs in the country
Talking about India’s global rise, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that since India is on the rising path, it is more viable than ever in history for a country like the US to partner with India in its journey towards technological advancement
“A young Indian professional is now looked at as a very valuable asset to have by the global ecosystem,” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar at BT Best B-Schools & HR Summit
