Monday spelled doom for Prabhas’ Adipurush as the film’s box office business went downhill. Adipurush registered a colossal drop of 75 per cent in box office earnings on Monday
The film could only manage to make around Rs 16 crore on its first Monday, taking its total domestic box office numbers to Rs 250.10 crore
Film critic and trade analyst Sumit Kadel said a crash on weekdays was inevitable because of never-seen-before negativity around this film on ground. He added audiences rejected the creative liberties taken by the makers of this film to portray Ramayana
The movie has been mocked widely on social media ever since it released in theatres. Film enthusiasts have criticised Adipurush for its depiction of Ramayana characters especially Lord Rama and Meghanad. They were also incensed with the way Vibhishana’s wife Sarama was portrayed in the film
Negative reviews and social media criticism triggered massive ticket cancellations. People cancelled their tickets booked well in advance as they believe they wouldn’t want to pay their hard money to watch Adipurush
Multiple theatres across India witnessed fierce protests. In videos on social media, protestors can be heard shouting slogans against the movie and its creators
Adipurush row: A group of people protested in Lucknow on Wednesday, expressing their displeasure over the Prabhas film. The protestors were later detained by Hazratganj Police
Acharya Satyendra Das, Ram Janmabhoomi head priest, said that the dialogues of Adipurush are shameful and that it should be banned immediately. He added the film presents Lord Rama, Lord Hanumana and Ravana in “totally different manner”
Amid dwindling domestic box office and protests in theatres, All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) wrote to PM Modi and urged him to stop screening the movie and immediately order a ban on Adipurush. They further said: “We need an FIR against director (Om Raut), writer (Manoj Muntashir Shukla), and the producers of the film”
Adipurush writer Manoj Muntashir told Aaj Tak that Lord Hanumana or Bajrangbali was a devotee and not a God. Muntashir said: “He (Lord Hanumana) does not talk like Lord Rama. Bajrangbali does not talk philosophical stuff. Bajrangbali is a devotee and not a God. We made him a God because his devotion towards Lord Rama had that sort of power”.
