Gadar 2’s glorious box office run took a hit when Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan released in theatres worldwide on September 7.
Ever since the Shah Rukh Khan-led action-thriller hit theatres, Gadar 2 went down from the second position to the third position in the list of the highest Hindi openers of 2023 so far. Jawan collected Rs 75 crore on its opening day, followed by Pathaan (Rs 57 crore) and Gadar 2 (Rs 40.1 crore).
Within five days of its release, Jawan surpassed the first week India box office collections of Gadar 2. Jawan minted around Rs 316.56 crore within the first five days of its release. Gadar 2, on the other hand, made Rs 284.63 crore in its first week.
The Shah Rukh Khan-led flick hit the Rs 250 crore within the first four days of its release. With this feat, Jawan overtook not only Gadar 2 but also Shah Rukh Khan’s own Pathaan. Gadar 2 took six days to cross the Rs 250 crore mark at the domestic box office whereas Pathaan took five days to achieve the Rs 250 crore milestone.
Jawan joined the coveted club of Hindi movies that have crossed Rs 100 crore at the box office. The other two films in this category are Shah Rukh Khan’s own Pathaan and Yash and Sanjay Dutt-led KGF: Chapter 2.
Shah Rukh Khan’s production company Red Chillies Entertainment announced that Jawan has made a whopping Rs 129.60 crore globally. With this, Jawan got the biggest-ever opening numbers in the history of Hindi cinema.
While Jawan beat Gadar 2 in multiple departments, it could not beat it in this one-of-its-kind record. Sunny Deol’s film created the record of the highest collection on the first Tuesday with an impressive Rs 55.40 crore. Jawan, on the other hand, is estimated to have earned around Rs 27.50 crore on its first Tuesday.
Jawan is expected to surpass Rs 500 crore soon and is likely to surpass the lifetime collection of Pathaan. Pathaan made a total of Rs 543.09 crore in its lifetime at the India box office whereas Gadar 2 has made Rs 514.89 crore at the domestic ticket counters so far.
Jawan is a high-octane action-thriller that focuses on the emotional journey of a man set out to correct the wrongs of the society. The film has an IMDb rating of 7.9/10 and audience score of 89 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Gadar 2 is the sequel of the 2001 superhit film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. The film focuses on Tara Singh who tries to rescue his son from the clutches of the Pakistani Army. The film has an IMDb rating of 5.9/10 and an audience score of 78 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.
