Rani Mukerji’s upcoming film Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway will hit theatres on March 17. Besides Mukerji, the film stars Anirban Bhattacharya, Jim Sarbh, Neena Gupta in pivotal roles
The film focuses on an Indian couple in Norway whose children were taken away by the country’s welfare services in 2011. The film also puts light on the couple’s heart wrenching fight against the Norwegian government to reunite with their children
The Ashima Chibber directorial is based on the real-life story of Sagarika Bhattacharya and her husband Anurup, whose children -- 3-year-old Avigyan and 1-year-old Aishwarya -- were taken away by the Norwegian welfare services
The Norwegian authorities stated that Sagarika fed the kids by hand and also objected to their son sleeping in the same bed as his father. The couple was also accused of providing ‘unsuitable’ clothes to their kids
After a diplomatic row between Norway and India, the authorities gave the children’s custody to Anurup Bhattacharya’s brother. This enabled them to bring the children back to India
The battle to get their children’s custody took a toll on Sagarika and Anurup’s marital life. The couple was estranged and she had to fight a legal battle to get custody of the children
Anurup told Norwegian authorities that his wife had serious psychological problem and that she allegedly screams, howls and attacks him. He added his wife is immature, depressed and anxious
The Calcutta High Court granted the custody of Avigyan and Aishwarya to Sagarika in January 2013
