Indian documentary The Elephant Whisperers, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, has won the award for Best Documentary Short Film at the Oscars 2023
The Tamil documentary 'The Elephant Whisperers' emerged as the winner at the 95th Academy Awards making it Monga's second victory in the Documentary Short Subject category. She was executive producer for 'Period. End of Sentence' that won an Oscar in 2019
The other four nominees in the category were ‘Haulout’, ‘The Martha Mitchell Effect’, ‘Stranger at the Gate’, and ‘How Do You Measure a Year’
"We just won the first ever Oscar for an Indian Production! Two women did this! I am still shivering," tweeted Guneet Monga after the historic win
Set in the Mudumalai National Park, The Elephant Whisperers revolves around an orphaned elephant calf named Raghu in the care of an indigenous couple named Bomman and Belli. It was released on Netflix in December 2022

In addition to The Elephant Whisperers, the globally viral song, 'Naatu Naatu', from SS Rajamouli's period-action drama RRR won in the Best Original Song category at the Oscars 2023
RRR's Naatu Naatu created history at the Oscars 2023 by becoming the first song from any Indian film to win in the Best Original Song category. The song had previously bagged top honours at the Golden Globes 2023 and Critics Choice Awards
