The new Netflix docuseries 'The Romantics', made by Indian-American filmmaker Smriti Mundhra, is a tribute to late film director Yash Chopra
The documentary looks back at Yash Chopra's entry into filmmaking under his brother BR Chopra's wings in 1958. The first film he directed was Dhool Ka Phool
However, after a few years, Yash Chopra decided to start his own film production house Yash Raj Films (YRF) and left BR Chopra's company
Daag became the first film to be produced by YRF in 1973. Following this, Yash Chopra soon started dominating the Hindi film industry with his back-to-back hit Bollywood films in 1980s, 1990s and well into the new millennium
Two of India's biggest superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan saw success and achieved stardom with films produced by Yash Raj Films
Kabhi Kabhie, Silsila, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Darr, Dil Toh Pagal Hai were some of the biggest YRF films that turned Amitabh Bachchan and SRK into legendary actors
Interestingly, the Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Pathaan, which has revived Bollywood's fortune, has also come from the YRF banner
But, Yash Chopra passed away almost a decade before Pathaan's release. Tragically, the filmmaker died of dengue fever during Jab Tak Hai Jaan's production in 2012
The Romantics also looks at how Yash Chopra's son Aditya Chopra has carried forward his father's legacy
Aditya Chopra, who has been a media-shy personality, opens up about his relationship with his father, the influence he had on him and the ups and downs Yash Raj Films has seen over the years in The Romantics
Aditya Chopra also speaks about the allegations of nepotism against Bollywood insiders and his initiative to launch new stars
Stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif also shared their experience of working with Yash Raj Films
The documentary also throws light on Yash Chopra's wife and veteran playback singer Pamela Chopra and her memories of the filmmaker
Yash Chopra's younger son and actor Uday Chopra also speaks about his relationship with his father
Uday Chopra also speaks about his short stint in Bollywood and how he decided to step away from acting as a career
The documentary released on February 14 on the occasion of Valentine’s Day on Netflix and has created quite a buzz in India. Director of 'Indian Matchmaking' and 'Never Have I Ever' Smriti Mundhra has broken down the series into four parts The Boy from Jalandhar, Prodigal Son and The New Guard and Legacy
