Delhi’s International Airport was ranked as the ninth busiest airport of the world in 2022 with an annual handling capacity of 59.5 million people. The airport is operated by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a GMR Airport Infrastructure Limited-led consortium.
DIAL announced the launch of the latest Self-Baggage Drop (SBD) facility at Terminal 3 of the international airport. This new passenger-friendly initiative will be helpful in reducing the waiting time for passengers by 15-20 mins by streamlining the baggage drop-off process.
The new baggage drop-off system will currently be available for domestic passengers only at Delhi’s IGI Airport. The company said that the service will be offered to international passengers after getting mandatory approvals.
The GMR-led consortium has installed fourteen Self-Baggage Drop points at Check-in Row-P of Terminal 3. Twelve of them are automatic while two are based on the hybrid model. Each of these points have the capacity to process luggage of three passengers per minute. The weight capacity for each machine has been calibrated at 120 kg.
Self-Baggage Drop is a two-step process: First, the passengers have to generate their boarding passes and baggage tags from the Self Check-In kiosks. Then, attach the tags to their check-in baggage and proceed towards the Self-Baggage Drop point.
Passengers then have to scan their boarding passes and also declare that their bags do not contain any dangerous/prohibited items. After that place the baggage on the dedicated belt will then take it to the sorting area. After sorting, the baggage will be loaded into your aircraft.

Currently, only Indigo passengers can avail this facility but approvals are expected from five other airlines – Air India, Vistara, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch and the British Airways.
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar also commented on the new initiative from his company. He said, “The Self-Baggage Drop facility aims to make the passengers self-reliant, while at the same time reduce the time taken for baggage processing significantly and providing them the option to truly enjoy their time at the Airport.”
Along with Delhi Airport, GMR launched the Self-Baggage Drop facility at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad as well. Passengers can use the new system near the entry gate number–9 of the airport.
