Inspired by the pages of science fiction, this thought experiment challenges teams to craft a vessel capable of sustaining life for over 250 years. The imagination isn’t bound by galaxies, but the science is.
Even with current propulsion technologies, reaching Proxima Centauri, our closest star system, would take millennia. Advanced concepts, though, could trim the journey to 36-85 years, notes Universe Today.
This isn’t just a ship—it’s a mobile society. The design must allow for life to flourish, ensuring the crew lives, reproduces, and sustains across generations until reaching a distant, unknown haven.
From agriculture to artificial gravity, entrants must propose ways to mimic Earth’s systems. Comprehensive radiation shielding will guard up to 1,500 inhabitants from the cosmos’ harsh realities.
“Think of the difference between a drone and an ocean liner,” explains Andreas Hein of the Organizing Committee. These vast ships must blend fusion-based propulsion with self-sustaining habitats.
Teams are required to integrate engineers, designers, and social scientists, ensuring the spaceship isn’t just functional but also a thriving societal microcosm. Humanity’s culture must journey alongside.
Yazgi Demirbas, an architect and committee member, believes that this competition could teach us how to tackle Earth’s existential crises. The planet itself could benefit from star-bound creativity.
The winning concept, judged on innovation and feasibility, will earn its team $10,000. Yet the real reward? A glimpse into the extraordinary future humanity might someday embark upon.
