The Adani Group has announced a collaboration with architect Hafeez Contractor for its ambitious Dharavi project, focused on the redevelopment and rehabilitation of around 0.7 million residents residing in one of Asia's largest slum clusters.
Hafeez Contractor, a Padma Bhushan recipient, stands as a significant name in the Indian real estate sector. His involvement as an architect often adds value to projects, with apartments easily finding buyers in top cities.
Hafeez Contractor has been associated with numerous social housing projects, collaborating with entities such as US design firm Sasaki, UK-based consultancy firm Buro Happold, and experts from Singapore.
Among Hafeez Contractor's notable works are The Imperial Towers in Mumbai, 23 Marina in Dubai (one of the tallest residential buildings globally), Mumbai and New Delhi's busiest airports, and the DY Patil Cricket Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Born in Mumbai, Hafeez Contractor studied at Boy's Town Boarding School, Nashik, and completed his architectural studies at the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai. He further graduated from Columbia University in 1976-77, officially beginning his career in 1968 as an apprentice with Ar. T. Khareghat.
Hafeez Contractor's architectural firm has witnessed substantial growth, evolving from a modest three-person setup in 1982 to a team exceeding 550 professionals. With over 2,500 clients and ongoing projects encompassing 7.2 billion square feet in 100 cities and 5 countries, Contractor's firm holds a significant presence in the industry.
In November 2022, the Adani Group secured the Dharavi redevelopment project, winning the bid with a commitment of an initial investment of Rs 5,069 crore for the comprehensive Rs 20,000-crore initiative.
