ISRO Chief S. Somanath highlighted the rigorous criteria and varied skills needed for astronauts in India's Gaganyaan missions. The current candidates are primarily skilled Air Force pilots, but the role demands a unique combination of abilities beyond piloting.
Aspirants must possess a basic understanding of engineering, mathematics, astronautics, and mechanics. ISRO's training program further develops this knowledge, aiming to make astronauts as proficient as ISRO scientists, both in creating and operating the spacecraft.
Physical fitness and psychological resilience are key aspects of astronaut selection. Candidates undergo intense training to handle high acceleration, maintain mental balance in stressful conditions, work collaboratively, and stay calm under pressure.

Somanath emphasized that astronaut training is a transformative experience, where even seasoned Air Force pilots must adapt to new learning environments. The training is rigorous and different from their military background, requiring continuous learning and adaptability.
The selection process involves experts from various fields, including engineering, medical, and aeronautical disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that candidates meet the comprehensive requirements of the space mission.
The current group of four astronaut candidates has been selected from the Indian Air Force. Their technical prowess and ability to pilot various vehicles, including helicopters and fighter jets, were key factors in their selection.
While the initial selection is focused on Air Force pilots, Somanath hinted at a more inclusive future. He suggested that future astronaut candidates could come from various backgrounds, reflecting ISRO’s commitment to a diverse and robust space program.
