In a significant electoral triumph, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to sweep Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The saffron party has crossed the majority-mark in all three Hindi heartland states in a big blow to Congress ahead of the 2024 general election.
KCR-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has lost Telangana after two successive terms. The Congress, which was not seen as a serious contender until few months ago, has recorded much-needed victory in the southern state. Congress is leading on 60-plus seats.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, initially perceived to be sidelined for this election, orchestrated a significant comeback for the BJP. The saffron party is set to win 160-plus seats.
Shivraj Chouhan attributed the BJP's success in Madhya Pradesh to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's impact on the electorate. The Prime Minister's public appeals during campaign events were highlighted as influential in the state.
Biggest shock for the Congress has come from Chhattisgarh, a state it won just five years ago. The grand old party was confident of retaining Chhattisgarh under the leadership of Bhupesh Baghel but the BJP has snatched the state from it, leaving the Congress leadership shell-shocked.
Rajasthan, which has a history of not repeating government, has voted out incumbent Congress. The BJP is back in power with thumping majority. The internal rivalry between Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his party colleague Sachin Pilot appears to have compounded the challenges for the Congress.
Telangana emerged as a stronghold for the Congress, with lead on 64 of 119 seats. with this win, the grand old party has solidified its presence in the southern India. Just months ago, Congress wrested Karnataka from the BJP.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's (KCR) contrasting performance in Gajwel and Kamareddy added complexity to the Telangana results. In Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot has won the seat but lost power to BJP. Bhupesh Baghel, too, is likely to retain his seat but will lose power.
The results for Mizoram were postponed by a day by the Election Commission, respecting the Christian-majority state's observance of Sunday. The results in Mizoram will be declared on Monday (December 4).
