Airbus Defence and Space, a prominent European aerospace company, is responsible for delivering the initial batch of C-295 aircraft. Out of the 56 aircraft ordered, 16 will be supplied in flyaway condition. The remaining aircraft will be assembled in India at a state-of-the-art facility owned by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in Vadodara, Gujarat
This significant milestone follows a contract signed between the Indian Ministry of Defence and Airbus two years ago. The contract, which encompasses the procurement of 56 C-295 aircraft, aligns with India's strategic objectives of bolstering self-reliance and self-sufficiency within the defence manufacturing sector
The successful execution of this ambitious program is a result of collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus. This joint endeavour signifies the partnership between Indian and European entities, underlining the shared commitment to strengthening India's defence capabilities
The second C-295 aircraft designated for the IAF is currently in the advanced stages of assembly at Airbus's facility in Seville, Spain. This aircraft is expected to be delivered in May 2024, contributing to the IAF's enhanced transport capabilities
Over the coming years, the IAF will progressively receive the remaining C-295 aircraft. The last of the 16 flyaway aircraft will be delivered by August 2025. Subsequently, the first 'Made in India' C-295 is set to roll out from the Vadodara facility in September 2026, with the final 39 aircraft expected to be delivered by August 2031
The procurement and assembly of the C-295 aircraft in India marks a historic achievement. It signifies the first instance of a military aircraft being manufactured in India through the collaborative efforts of a private consortium. This development positions the IAF to become the world's largest operator of the C-295 aircraft, enhancing its capabilities and self-reliance
Under the C-295 India project, a substantial portion of the manufacturing process will be carried out within India. This includes the production of more than 13,000 parts, 4,600 subassemblies, and all major component assemblies. While key equipment such as engines, landing gear, and avionics will be provided by Airbus, the integration of these components onto the aircraft will take place in India. The C-295 tactical air-lifter is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW127G turboprop engines
The C-295 contract is comprehensive in scope, covering a range of critical aspects. It includes performance-based logistics support for five years, the supply of spares to 10 operating bases over a decade, ground support equipment, and test equipment, along with comprehensive training programs to ensure the IAF's efficient operation and maintenance of the aircraft
The C-295 is a versatile transport aircraft with a wide range of capabilities. It can transport payloads weighing up to 9 tonnes, carry 71 personnel, or accommodate 45 paratroopers
