Significance of Dwarka

Dwarka is one of India’s seven holy pilgrimage sites and is both religiously and archaeologically significant. It is located at the western tip of the Saurashtra peninsula in Gujarat and is known as the “ancient kingdom of Krishna” from the epic Mahabharata.

Legend of the Sunken City

According to the Mahabharata, Dwarka was a fortified city that sank beneath the Arabian Sea following the death of Krishna. The city’s remains are believed to be submerged and are being sought by historians and archaeologists.

Cause of Submersion

The sacred scripture Srimad Bhagavatam states that Dwarka was built by Krishna to avoid attacks from Jarasandha, ruler of Magadha. The city was constructed by the architect Vishwakarma and later submerged as sea levels rose, coinciding with Krishna’s departure from Earth.

Historical Excavations

Initial excavations began in the 1930s around Bet Dwarka, followed by further efforts in the 1960s and a significant excavation by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1979, which unearthed pottery dating from the second millennium BC.

Archaeological Findings

Archaeologists discovered structures that appeared to be fortified foundations, over 500 artifacts, stone blocks, pillars, and irrigation systems. These findings suggest a cultural succession of approximately 2000 years and indicate Dwarka’s significance as a historic port.

Scientific Studies

Studies have revealed fluctuating sea levels in the region, which may have contributed to Dwarka’s submersion. The changing sea levels are attributed to geological disturbances and coastal erosion.

Recent Discoveries

Recent underwater explorations, including those by Dr. S.R. Rao and Dr. Rajiv Nigam, have provided evidence supporting the existence of the submerged city. These discoveries align with descriptions found in ancient literature.

Tourist Attractions in Dwarka

Dwarka remains a prominent pilgrimage site with attractions like the Shree Dwarkadhish Temple, Gopi Talav, and the ancient tradition of Tulabhara. Visitors can also enjoy camel rides along the Gomti River and shop for souvenirs in Dwarkadhish Market.

The best time to visit Dwarka is between November and February. The nearest airports are Porbandar Airport and Jamnagar Airport. Dwarka is well-connected by road, and travelers can book cabs from Ahmedabad for a comfortable journey.
