NASA has launched the South Pole Safety Challenge, inviting innovators to design a life-saving Lunar Rescue System capable of transporting incapacitated astronauts across the Moon's rugged terrain. The initiative, part of the Artemis missions, aims to address critical safety concerns ahead of the September 2026 lunar mission.
The space agency is offering a $20,000 top prize from a total pool of $45,000. Submissions are open via the HeroX portal until January 23, 2025. Proposals will be judged based on effectiveness, weight, and compatibility with NASA’s new Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Suit.
The Artemis program plans to explore the Moon’s South Pole, a region chosen for its potential water-ice reserves. However, its extreme conditions—sharp rocks, steep slopes, and deep craters—pose challenges, especially in emergencies where astronauts may need evacuation.
Participants are tasked with designing a system to move a fully suited astronaut over 2 kilometers and up inclines of up to 20 degrees without using a lunar rover. The Moon’s reduced gravity eases weight constraints but still requires technological solutions beyond manual carrying.
NASA aims to prepare for scenarios such as medical emergencies, injuries, or mission-related accidents. "The unforgiving lunar environment demands innovative solutions," said Sarah Duglas, a NASA official.
The design must function effectively in the Moon’s extreme temperatures and uneven terrain while maintaining compatibility with the bulky spacesuits worn by astronauts. NASA stresses the importance of a lightweight and user-friendly system.
Submitted designs will undergo thorough evaluation by NASA’s engineers, focusing on practical implementation in the South Pole environment. Emphasis will be placed on ease of use and minimal impact on astronaut mobility and safety.
