Landslides struck Kerala’s hilly Wayanad district on Tuesday, resulting in extensive damage and fatalities. The disaster has left the region grappling with loss and destruction.
State Health Minister Veena George reported that 23 bodies have been recovered so far. The victims’ remains have been placed in various hospital morgues across the district.for telescope time make it impractical for professionals to continuously monitor the event.
Authorities fear that hundreds might still be trapped under the debris. However, these concerns have not been officially confirmed yet.
State Revenue Minister K Rajan stated that over 70 injured individuals have been admitted to hospitals. Rescue operations are ongoing, involving multiple agencies and volunteers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress over the incident. He assured Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of the Centre’s full support and assistance in the rescue and relief efforts.
The villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha have been severely impacted by the landslides. These areas have been cut off, complicating rescue operations.
Wayanad district Collector Meghasree D R reported that disaster relief work is progressing. The NDRF, fire force, police, and local departments are all actively involved in the rescue missions.
In a precautionary measure, the shutter of Banasura Sagar dam on the Karamanthodu river was opened. Residents living downstream have been warned to stay cautious.
Two Air Force helicopters are set to depart from Sulur to assist in search and rescue operations. Many families have been evacuated to camps or the homes of relatives to ensure their safety.
