The Indian Navy officially inaugurated its newest naval base, "INS Jatayu," on Wednesday at Minicoy island in Lakshadweep, aiming to enhance its operational capabilities in the strategically crucial Indian Ocean region.
The establishment of INS Jatayu aims to bolster the Navy's operational reach and effectiveness, particularly in anti-piracy and anti-narcotics operations in the Western Arabian Sea.
INS Jatayu becomes the second naval base in Lakshadweep after INS Dweeprakshak in Kavaratti, further solidifying India's presence in the region and enhancing maritime security efforts.
Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar led the commissioning ceremony of INS Jatayu in Minicoy, with key dignitaries such as Lakshadweep administrator Praful Patel and Naval Command Chiefs Vice Admiral V Srinivas and Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh in attendance.
The base's name, "Jatayu," derives from the mythical character in the epic Ramayana, symbolizing bravery and selfless service. Admiral Kumar highlighted Jatayu's role as a "first responder" in the Ramayana, emphasizing the unit's commitment to security and service.
INS Jatayu is expected to provide crucial situational awareness to the Indian Navy, akin to the role played by Jatayu in relaying information to Lord Ram. Its strategic location enables effective monitoring of maritime activities in the region.
Against the backdrop of increasing maritime threats such as piracy and terrorism, INS Jatayu assumes significance in safeguarding national interests and maintaining maritime domain awareness.
The commissioning of INS Jatayu underscores India's proactive stance in addressing emerging geopolitical challenges, especially in the context of heightened maritime security concerns in the Indian Ocean region.
With its enhanced surveillance capabilities, INS Jatayu is poised to play a pivotal role in gathering information on shipping movements and ensuring maritime safety and security in the region, as emphasized by Naval Officer-in-Charge Captain Lovekesh Thakur.
