In 2014, Shantanu Naidu, a design engineer in Pune, witnessed a dog’s tragic accident and developed reflective collars for strays. He wrote to Ratan Tata for support. Tata, moved by the cause, responded warmly, marking the start of their unique connection.
Tata became more than just a supporter of Shantanu’s initiative—he became a mentor. He invited Shantanu to Mumbai, providing guidance that shaped his approach to business, leadership, and social causes.
After Tata encouraged him to pursue higher education, Shantanu earned his MBA from Cornell University. He kept his promise to return to India and work for Tata, rejoining as a trusted assistant after graduation.
To celebrate Shantanu’s graduation, Tata visited his home, personally congratulating him and taking photos with him in his graduation robe. This gesture showcased their deep connection beyond professional ties.
Upon returning to India, Shantanu became the youngest manager at Tata Trusts. He took on significant roles, helping drive Tata’s philanthropic vision and blending youthful energy with Tata’s timeless values.
With Tata’s mentorship, Shantanu’s “Motopaws” initiative grew, expanding across India to save stray dogs with reflective collars, a testament to their shared passion for animal welfare.
Together, they launched "Goodfellows," a startup focused on providing companionship to the elderly. Shantanu managed operations, while Tata provided strategic guidance, aligning their shared compassion for the elderly.
Shantanu helped Tata establish his Instagram account in 2019, enabling Tata to share memories, personal stories, and photos of his beloved dogs. This brought Tata closer to a younger audience, making him more accessible.
Tata trusted Shantanu with personal and professional responsibilities, from managing projects to representing Tata’s ideals publicly. This trust was built on deep mutual respect and understanding.
After Tata’s passing, Shantanu described him as a “lighthouse” guiding his life. Their bond, built on mentorship, compassion, and friendship, left a lasting legacy that Shantanu vowed to honor.
