At least 288 people have been killed and over 900 injured as of Saturday afternoon due to a triple train accident in the Balasore district of Odisha on the night of June 2. This has become one of India's deadliest train accident in the recent past
The train mishap began when the passenger train Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express on the down line reportedly derailed at around 6.55 pm
10-12 coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, which was enroute to Chennai, derailed on the up line near Baleswar and fell on the opposite track at around 7 pm
The derailed coaches of the Coromandel Express collided with the Bengaluru-Howrah train as the train coming from Yeswanthpur dashed into the derailed coaches resulting in the derailment of its 3-4 coaches, as per Railway Spokesperson Amitabh Sharma
Some of the derailed coaches further ended up colliding with a goods train. This caused a triple pile-up
The triple pile up took place near the Bahanaga Baazar station in Balasore, which is about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar
