Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure has witnessed a dynamic series of airport inaugurations across the nation, focusing on bolstering connectivity to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme.
Over the past seven years, PM Modi has inaugurated five airports, while also unveiling three cutting-edge terminals at existing major airports, propelling India towards a future-ready aviation sector.
In a pivotal moment for Uttar Pradesh, PM Modi inaugurated the Kushinagar International Airport in October 2021. As the third international airport in the state, it joins the ranks of Lucknow and Varanasi. The airport's strategic location supports travel, tourism, and business opportunities, elevating Uttar Pradesh's status on the aviation map.
In a move that strengthens Odisha's connectivity, the Jharsuguda Airport was inaugurated for commercial flights on September 22, 2018. This airport's role as a lifeline in the western region of Odisha has far-reaching implications. It draws attention from investors, augments the mineral-rich region's economic prospects, and enhances connectivity for nearby cities like Raipur and Ranchi.
An upgraded Tezu Airport in Arunachal Pradesh, inaugurated by PM Modi on February 9, 2019, holds immense significance for the region. This airport, achieved through an investment of Rs 125 crore, fosters vital connections to Guwahati, Jorhat, and Hollongi. Its role in enhancing accessibility to the northeastern states aligns with the government's focus on balanced regional development.
Pakyong Airport was inaugurated on September 24, 2018, thrusting Sikkim into the aviation forefront. Situated atop a hill at an elevation of 4,500 feet, this scenic airport redefines connectivity. Its strategic positioning near the Indo-China border contributes to regional development, trade, and tourism in the state.
Deodhar Airport, situated in Jharkhand, spans across an impressive 657 acres. This airport stands as the second in the state, providing robust links to Ranchi, Patna, and Delhi. The visionary infrastructure sets the stage for enhanced regional connectivity, economic growth, and trade prospects.
Complementing these airport achievements, PM Modi also inaugurated state-of-the-art terminals at Chandigarh, Vadodara, and Maharaja Bir Bikram (Tripura) airports. In addition to the airports that have already been inaugurated, several others are currently in various stages of construction. Notable among these are the Jewar Airport located in Noida, International Greenfield Airport, Bhiwadi International Airport in Alwar and the Navi Mumbai International Airport. These forthcoming airports are set to play pivotal roles in shaping India's aviation landscape, fostering connectivity, and facilitating economic growth.
