The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has broken into the world's top 150 universities in the latest edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2024
IIT Bombay has climbed 23 positions from its previous year’s ranking to secure the 149th slot this year. This is the first time ever since its participation that IIT Bombay has been ranked within the top 150 in QS rankings
Another Indian university making it to the top 200 list is IIT Delhi, which is ranked 197 this year. Meanwhile, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), which was ranked 155 previously, has slipped to the 225th spot
For the first time, 45 Indian Institutions got ranked in QS World University Rankings. IIT Kharagpur's ranking stood at 271, IIT Kanpur at 278, IIT Madras at 285, IIT Guwahati at 364, IIT Roorkee at 369
Delhi University, ranked at 407, and Anna University ranked at 427, have found place among the top 500 institutions the world over for the first time. QS founder and CEO, in an interview with ANI, said that there has been a continuous and steady improvement by Indian varsities over the last few years
The chief also congratulated Chandigarh University for securing 780 rank and becoming the top-performing Indian private university. "I'd particularly like to congratulate IIT Bombay for being the top-performing Indian university," he said
Between the years 2018 and 2022, IIT Bombay generated a remarkable 1,43,800 citations from 15,905 academic papers, indicating a significant research growth of approximately 17 per cent, according to an India Today report
IIT Bombay’s impressive trajectory of consistent improvements in research quality and reputation has facilitated its rise to prominence, an official statement from IIT Bombay said
Meanwhile, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar told ANI that Indian universities are world-class. "I am happy that 45 Indian universities have made it to the rankings in this year's QS World University Rankings. Indian education is now not just good, it is amongst the world's best," he said
The top three institutes globally on this year’s list are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, followed by UK’s Cambridge University and Oxford University. National University Singapore has become the first Asian university to break into the top 10 rankings
