Medal Rationalization

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has disclosed the annual gallantry and service awards, streamlining 16 medals into four categories on the occasion of 75th Republic Day.

Medal Rationalization Details

A total of 1132 personnel from diverse agencies, including police, fire service, home guards, civil defence, and correction service, will receive gallantry and service awards.

Four Merged Medals

The MHA stated that 16 gallantry and service medals have been consolidated into four categories: President's Medal for Gallantry (PMG), Medal for Gallantry (GM), President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PMG), and Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).

Gallantry Medals Announcement

Among the announced gallantry medals, 277 will be distributed, including 275 Medals for Gallantry and two President's Medals for Gallantry. Notably, 133 personnel are recognized for actions in Jammu and Kashmir, 119 in Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected areas, and 25 in other regions.

Recognition for Actions in Specific Regions

Within the 277 gallantry medals, two PMG awards are designated for Border Security Force (BSF) personnel who demonstrated exceptional courage.

Service and Meritorious Service Medals

Under the Medal for Distinguished Service category, 102 personnel, predominantly from the police, will be honoured. In contrast, the Medal for Meritorious Service will be given to 753 individuals.

Distribution Across Agencies

The breakdown of medals includes 94 for police in the Distinguished Service category, while the fire service and civil defence each receive four. In the Meritorious Service category, 32 medals go to the fire service, and both civil defence and correctional service receive 27 medals each.
