The founder-leader of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Vijayakanth has passed away at the age of 71 in Chennai, succumbing to complications arising from Covid.
Sincere tributes flowed in from various parts of India following the news of Vijayakanth's passing. Bollywood actor Sonu Sood shared a picture of Vijayakanth, from their first movie Kallazhagar on his X account. He said, “Kallazgar, my first film ever, was a gift from the legend ‘VIJAYKANTH’ sir. He came across this still of mine and in no time, I was filming with him. I owe my career to him. Will miss you so much, sir. RIP CAPTAIN.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also wrote on X that he was extremely saddened by the passing away of the actor-turned-politician. He said that Vijayakanth was a legend of the Tamil film world and his charismatic performances captured the heart of millions. He added, “As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape."
In November, Vijayakanth faced a decline in his health, leading to his admission to MIOT Hospital in Chennai. He endured a 14-day observation under medical supervision, grappling with persistent coughing and throat discomfort.
Vijayakanth initiated his acting career with "Inikkum Ilamai" in 1979. His unassuming appearance coupled with a commanding screen presence swiftly garnered popularity among audiences. A pivotal breakthrough came with "Sattam Oru Iruttarai" in 1981, directed by Vijay's father, SA Chandrasekhar. Subsequently, he collaborated on several projects with SAC, including "Nenjile Thunivirunthal," "Needhi Pizhaithathu," and "Pattanathu Rajakkal," establishing him as a reliable newcomer in the industry.

In the '90s, Vijayanath’s focus gravitated towards portraying the character of a police officer, a trend that commenced with "Pulan Visaranai." Following the success of "Chatriyan" in 1990, another significant achievement was "Captain Prabhakaran" in 1991, catapulting him to superstardom. The nickname 'Captain,' derived from the film, became his nickname. Noteworthy police-centric films in his career include "Sethupathi IPS" (1994), "Maanagara Kaaval" (1991), "Rajadurai" (1993), "Thai Mozhi" (1993), and "Honest Raj" (1994).
Vijayakanth's had a successful career in the Tamil film industry, where he acted in 154 movies. During his acting days, Vijaykanth earned recognition as the 'Raja of B and C Class theatres.' Despite his films facing commercial challenges, they consistently attracted substantial audiences in smaller towns, proving to be financially viable for producers.
After a stint in the film industry, Vijayakanth transitioned into the realm of politics, serving twice as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, representing the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies.
Upon entering the political arena, the DMDK contested all 234 constituencies in the 2006 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. Despite Vijayakanth being the solitary winner for his party, the DMDK garnered a notable 8% vote share.
Vijayakanth's recent health challenges restricted his active participation in political rallies, leading his wife Premalatha and her brother L K Sudheesh to assume pivotal leadership roles within the party in his absence.
