This list emphasises the growing significance of individual givers in India's philanthropic landscape. Established in 1999, Hurun Report is a privately held firm renowned for creating various lists and conducting research. The primary offering of this company is the prestigious Hurun Rich List

Record-Breaking  Philanthropy

The report reveals that 119 philanthropists, including 25 new entrants, cumulatively donated INR 8,445 crores, marking a 59% increase from the previous year and a remarkable 200% increase compared to three years ago

Shiv Nadar Reigns as India's Most Generous

Shiv Nadar, aged 78, retains the title of 'India's Most Generous' for the third time in five years, with an astonishing annual donation of Rs 2,042 crore, equivalent to Rs 5.6 crore per day

Azim Premji's Generous Contributions

Azim Premji, also 78, secures the second spot with an annual donation of Rs 1,774 crore, reflecting the remarkable philanthropic spirit in India

Mukesh Ambani

Mukesh Ambani, India's wealthiest individual at the age of 66, secured the third position in the list for 2023 by making a generous donation of Rs 376 crore

Youngest Entrant in the List

Nithin and Nikhil Kamath, the co-founders of Zerodha, stand as the youngest philanthropist in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023 and secured the 6th spot in the ranking. The Kamath brothers donated Rs 110 crore this year

Leading Women  Philanthropists

Rohini Nilekani, aged 64, emerges as the most generous woman philanthropist with a donation of Rs 170 crore, followed by Anu Aga and Leena Gandhi Tewari, each contributing Rs 23 crore

Generous New Entrant

K Dinesh, aged 69, makes a remarkable entry into the list, being the most generous new entrant with a donation of INR 47 crores

Family Philanthropy

Family philanthropy is on the rise, indicating a shift from ad-hoc giving to focused initiatives targeting new and marginalized areas, aiming to impact all strata of society. The Bajaj family, with a generous donation of Rs 264 crore, alongside Cyrus S Poonawalla and Adar Poonawalla, who donated Rs 179 crore, have all made a remarkable return to the top 10 list of India's most generous philanthropists. Additionally, Rohini Nilekani, with a contribution of Rs 170 crore, also reclaims her place in this prestigious group

Impactful Donations

Some notable individuals like AM Naik, who donated INR 150 crores, and Prashanth Prakash and Amitha Prashanth, who entered the list with INR 9 crores, are making significant contributions to philanthropy. The report highlights the surge in the number of donors contributing substantial amounts, with 14 individuals donating over INR 100 crores and 24 donating over INR 50 crores

Sector-Focused Giving

Education received significant attention from philanthropists, with 62 individuals cumulatively donating Rs 1,547 crore, reflecting a strong emphasis on this cause. The list indicates that the number of philanthropists donating more than Rs 10 crore has increased by approximately 119% over the past five years, reaching 81 in the current year

Mumbai Leads in  Philanthropy

Mumbai leads in terms of the place of residence for philanthropists on the list, with 33%, followed by New Delhi at 16% and Bengaluru at 11%

Impactful Causes

The report highlights a 31% increase in donations towards Environment & Sustainability, emphasising the growing focus on sustainability as a philanthropic cause
