The initiative gained significant traction in 2023 following former U.S. intelligence official David Grusch’s compelling congressional testimony. Grusch alleged Vatican involvement in an international cover-up of alien secrets, citing historical connections to recovered UFO incidents.
Marco Grilli, secretary to the prefect of the archives, responded skeptically to Grusch’s claims. He dismissed the inquiries as comparable to requests for obscure historical documents, highlighting the archive’s focus on religious and administrative records rather than speculative paranormal events.
Diana Walsh Pasulka, a prominent religious studies professor and author, contends that the Vatican’s archives may harbor records of paranormal occurrences that could be interpreted as UFO-related phenomena. Pasulka suggests these events could challenge traditional religious interpretations.

Garry Nolan, a professor at Stanford University, views the Vatican archives as a potentially rich source of knowledge regarding UFOs. Nolan posits that the Vatican’s longstanding collection of historical records may offer insights into unexplained aerial phenomena and their cultural, religious, and scientific implications.

The institute, known for its cultural influence and progressive ideas, has historically fostered dialogue on unconventional topics, including paranormal phenomena.
Despite speculation and ongoing interest from researchers, Vatican archivists unequivocally deny possessing any documents explicitly related to extraterrestrial life. They assert that the archive’s primary focus remains on preserving and cataloging historical and administrative records, discouraging further pursuit of unsubstantiated claims within their holdings.
