ISRO, in collaboration with the Indian Navy, successfully carried out "Well Deck" recovery trials for the Gaganyaan mission, testing procedures for retrieving the Crew Module after its sea landing.
The trials were performed aboard a well-deck ship from the Eastern Naval Command, a vessel designed to flood its deck with water, enabling safe retrieval of spacecraft like the Gaganyaan Crew Module.
A mock-up replicating the mass and dimensions of the actual Crew Module was used during the trial. This ensured realistic testing of recovery processes under controlled conditions.
Key operations included attaching a recovery buoy, towing the module, guiding it into the well deck, securing it on a fixture, and draining water from the deck. Each step was carefully monitored to validate procedures.
The trial emphasized the rapid and safe recovery of astronauts post-mission. The well-deck recovery method allows the Crew Module to be brought aboard the ship smoothly, ensuring the crew's comfort and safety.
Insights from the trial will help refine SOPs for both standard and emergency recovery scenarios, ensuring thorough preparedness for the Gaganyaan mission.
The Gaganyaan mission aims to send Indian astronauts on a three-day orbit around Earth. This recovery trial is a key milestone in ensuring all mission-critical systems are ready.
The joint effort by ISRO and the Indian Navy highlights India's commitment to developing human spaceflight capabilities, moving closer to becoming one of the few nations capable of conducting crewed space missions.
