Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made it mandatory to link your PAN with your Aadhaar number. Today (June 30) is the last date to link PAN-Aadhar
Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act provides that every individual who has been allotted a permanent account number (PAN) as of the 1st day of July 2017 and who is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number shall intimate his Aadhaar number in the prescribed form and manner. In other words, such persons must link their Aadhaar and PAN before the prescribed date, details mentioned on the Income Tax Department’s website
- Visit Income Tax e-filing portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/.
- Click on Quick Links and then - Link Aadhaar Status
- Enter 10-digit PAN number and 12-digit Aadhaar number
- Click on View Link
Write a message in this format to check the status: Type “UIDPAN” followed by a space. Eg –UIDPAN, enter 12-digit Aadhaar number, then a space and PAN number. After that, send the SMS to 567678 or 56161
- Open the Income Tax e-filing portal and register on it
- Your PAN (Permanent Account Number) will be your user id
- Log in by entering the User ID, password and date of birth
- A pop up window will appear, prompting you to link your PAN with Aadhaar
- Verify the PAN details on screen with the ones mentioned on your Aadhaar
- Enter your Aadhaar number and click on the ‘Link Now’ button
- A pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN
- PAN will become inoperative, and you will not get Income Tax Refund (ITR)
- Tax will be deducted at a higher rate, following the provisions of section 206AA
- Without PAN card, you won’t be able to deposit money over Rs 50,000 in a day
Till June 30, PAN and Aadhaar cards can be linked for free. After that, a fee of Rs 1,000 will be applicable to make the PAN operative by intimating the Aadhaar number
- Both registered and unregistered users can link their Aadhaar and PAN on the e-Filing portal
- If you have linked an incorrect Aadhaar with PAN and thereafter got your Aadhaar delinked, you will have to pay the applicable fee again for submitting a fresh PAN-Aadhaar linking request
- Correct your details in either PAN (please contact PROTEAN or NSDL) or AADHAR (Please contact UIDAI) database such that both have matching details by visiting TIN-NSDL website and UTIISL's PANOnline Portal
Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and Meghalaya don’t need to link PAN and Aadhaar cards. Further, NRI users and those above the age of 80 need not link their Aadhaar-PAN cards
