The government has announced March 31 as the last date to link PAN card and Aadhaar card. This is being done to make the tax payment system seamless and avoid tax evasion
The government had originally set June 30, 2022 as the last date to link PAN and Aadhaar card following which the ITR levied late fees of Rs 1,000. After March 31, taxpayers will face severe consequences if their Aadhaar card and PAN card are not linked
If the taxpayers fail to link their PAN and Aadhaar card by March 31, the PAN card will become inoperative. They will face consequences under I-T Act and have to suffer a number of implications, according to CBDT
The Aadhaar and PAN cards can be linked via simple steps
- Visit Income Tax e-Filing portal homepage
- Click on Link Aadhaar in Quick Links section
- Enter PAN number to receive an OTP
- Enter OTP and you will be redirected to e-Pay tax page
- Click on proceed, select AY as 2023-24, type of payment - Other Receipts (500) and continue
- Applicant amount will be pre-filled against others
- In case the payment has not been done, select Challan No./ITNS 280
- Select tax applicable as 0021 and type of payment as Rs 500
- Provide mandatory details and submit the required amount using UPI, credit/ debit cards, or net banking
To check Aadhar PAN link status online, follow these steps -
- Visit Income Tax e-filing portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
- Click on quick links and then select ‘Link Aadhaar status’
- Enter 10-digit PAN number and 12-digit Aadhaar number
- Click on View Link Aadhaar status
- If Aadhaar number appears, it means PAN-Aadhaar cards are linked
- Can’t buy a vehicle or get motor insurance
- Can’t open a bank account apart from basic Savings Account
- Can’t invest in Mutual Funds for above Rs 50,000
- Can’t invest in RBI bonds, company bonds, debentures
- Can’t deposit more than Rs 50,000 a day in a public or private bank
- Can’t avail LIC annual premium of more than Rs 50,000
- Can’t buy immovable properties worth more than Rs 10 Lakh
- Can’t do a foreign cash payment of more than Rs 50,000 in one go
As of now, there has been no official announcement by the government to extend the last date to link Aadhaar card and PAN card
