Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav is set to miss Ranji Trophy 2024 and initial IPL matches due to a sports hernia injury. As per reports, SKY has been diagnosed with sports hernia and is currently recuperating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He will be flying to Munich, Germany to get operated.
A sports hernia is a strain or tear of muscle, ligament, or tendon in the groin or lower abdomen, often caused by repetitive or explosive sports movements.
Common causes include twisting of the pelvis during activities like football, hockey, soccer, and rugby, leading to tears in soft tissues of the lower abdomen and pubic area.
Sports Hernia can be treated by adopting non-surgical treatment such as taking enough rest along with some physical therapy
Athletes with sports hernias who fail conservative treatment will often require surgical intervention to relieve their pain and allow them to return to play.
Initial treatment includes rest, ice application, and possibly compression to alleviate painful symptoms in the first 7 to 10 days.
Post-injury, athletes typically return to competition within 3 months after a minimum of 6 weeks for recovery and rehabilitation. Thus, SKY is expected to take part in the latter matches of IPL 2024.
To prevent sports hernia, avoid heavy lifting, lift with your legs, eat high-fiber foods, drink plenty of water, and maintain a healthy body weight.
