Benchmark indices saw a recovery on Thursday, following a sharp decline in the previous session. The upward move was supported by gains in state-owned lenders, metals and energy stocks. Headline index NSE Nifty closed at 21,255-level. Top gainers on the Nifty50 platform were PowerGrid, BPCL, Britannia Industries, Apollo Hospitals and HDFC Bank while losers included Bajaj Auto, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, HCL Tech and Cipla.
Stocks such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, SBI and Axis Bank were most active on NSE today, in terms of value. Tata Steel and ONGC were the other buzzing stocks on the platform, in terms of volume.
Shares of Hindustan Copper emerged as the top gainer in the NSE 500 index. The stock zoomed 10.83% on NSE today to settle at Rs 217.9.
Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd shares also rallied 9.75% to close at Rs 571.9. At this price, the company commanded a market capitalisation (m-cap) of Rs 14,588.1 crore.
Shares of Zensar Technologies surged 8.92% to end at Rs 624.9 today. The company's market cap came at Rs 14,155.3 crore.
Shares BEML Ltd gained 8.23% today to settle at Rs 2,717.75. The company's market valuation stood at Rs 11,317.9 crore.
Shares of City Union Bank fell sharply today. The stock dived 4.21% to close at Rs 149.05 on Thursday.
Vijaya Diagnostic Centre shares slipped 4.05% to end the session at Rs 647.25. The company's m-cap stood at Rs 6,621.9 crore today.
Shares of Prestige Estates Projects were also among top losers in the NSE 500 pack today. The stock lost 3.99% to settle at Rs 1,064.15. The company's market cap was at Rs 42,657.7 crore.
"We expect consolidation in Nifty now. There will be no shortage of trading opportunities on the stock-specific front. Participants should align their trades accordingly and prefer sectors, which are showing relatively higher strength," said Ajit Mishra, SVP - Technical Research at Religare Broking.
