The Scrub typhus infection has raised alarm in India with 14 deaths being reported due to it in Odisha and Himachal Pradesh, as of September 14
Scrub typhus is a bacterial disease caused by Orienta tsuysugamushi bacteria. It spreads to people through the bite of infected chiggers. Chiggers are tiny mites that feed on the skin of animals and humans
The symptoms of scrub typhus infection include:-
- High fever with chills
- Severe headache
- Dry cough
- Body aches and muscle pain
- Dark scab-like wounds at the site of chigger bite
- Red spots or rashes on the bodyRed eyes

A person falls ill with scrub typhus about 10 to 12 days after being bitten by an infected mite. While the course of the fever may end in two weeks, it is not unusual for it to last three or even four weeks
There is no vaccine available to prevent scrub typhus. One can prevent getting infected by focusing on pest control, maintaining hygiene, being cautious while handling pets, applying mite repellents to exposed skin, and regular cleaning of one’s surroundings
- Dress your child in clothing that covers their body completely
- Do not apply insect repellent on any body part of the baby
- Spray insect repellent onto your hands and then apply it to the child’s face
To detect a scrub typhus infection, the patient has to go through an Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay(ELISA) test if her/his fever continues for several days
As per the WHO, scrub typhus should be treated with the antibiotic Doxycycline. Doxycycline can be used in persons of any age, with the antibiotics being most effective if taken soon after symptoms begin
Scrub typhus was discovered in Southeast Asia in northern Australia, and in Japan, where the disease was first described in 1899
