Sadiwara, a far-flung village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag District, has been declared plastic-free by adopting an innovative scheme
Sadiwara village panchayat has started a unique mission for saving the environment. The village head has started a campaign called 'Give Plastic and Take Gold'
As per the gold for plastic scheme, if someone gives plastic waste of 20 quintals, then the Sadiwara village panchayat will give the person a gold coin
The sarpanch of Sadiwara village Farooq Ahmad Ganai, a lawyer by profession, is the brain behind 'Give Plastic and Take Gold' scheme. He encouraged everyone to submit as much plastic waste to the panchayat as possible to claim the gold incentive
Within 15 days of starting the scheme, the whole village of Jammu and Kashmir was declared plastic-free. The campaign gained popularity and soon other village panchayats also adopted this anti-plastic movement
Advocate Farooq Ahmad Ganai told ANI, “I started a slogan in my village to give polythene in return for a reward. I took the initiative to clean rivers and streams. Now, everyone in the village helped us to clear the sites.”
