Hinduism presents various accounts of the universe’s origins, viewing it as millions of years old and part of an ongoing cycle of creation, existence, and destruction.
According to Hindu beliefs, Brahma is the creator god who fashioned the universe from himself. He initiates the cycle of creation that allows for continuous regeneration of the universe.
After creation, the preservation of the universe is entrusted to Vishnu. His role ensures the continuity of life and the maintenance of order within the cosmos.
Shiva is responsible for the eventual destruction of the universe. This destruction is viewed as a necessary part of the cycle, allowing Brahma to recreate the universe anew.
Various stories explain the origins of the universe, such as a lotus flower emerging from Vishnu’s navel, from which Brahma created the heavens, Earth, and sky. Another account involves Brahma splitting himself into male and female to generate all beings.
One narrative suggests that life originated from the cracking of a cosmic egg, symbolizing the birth of the universe.
The Hymn of Creation from the Rig Veda suggests the mystery surrounding the universe’s origins, even questioning whether Brahman has full knowledge of it. Many Hindus interpret these stories as reflective of the universe’s complexity rather than literal scientific explanations, aligning with the belief in eternal cycles and reincarnation.
