A new report reveals that love marriages are increasingly getting clearance in India. The report was compiled after a survey amongst engaged and recently married couples
The report states that there has been a significant drop when it comes to arranged marriages. In 2020, 68 per cent of couples revealed that their marriage was arranged during the survey. However, there was a major reduction in the recent survey
In the 2023 survey conducted by WeddingWire India, the Indian subsidiary of The Knot Worldwide, a wedding technology platform, only 44 per cent of couples opted for arranged marriage resulting in a 24 per cent drop
In terms of planning, approximately 41 per cent of the couples start planning their wedding 4-6 months in advance, followed by 32 per cent who plan it only 1-3 months in advance, the report reveals
The WeddingWire report also mentions that the engagement period in India is much shorter than in countries abroad as a majority get engaged only six months or less prior to the wedding (72 per cent)
In the short window, smartphones or tablets (36 per cent) have surpassed offline or in-person resources (34 per cent) as the preferred mode of wedding planning in India, the report notes
58 per cent of couples now prefer to use wedding planning websites to plan their weddings, as compared to 47 per cent in 2020. Approx. every second couple that participated in the survey was aware that 6 out of 11 key activities like budgeting, finding trusted vendors, finding the right ring, among others, can be undertaken online by using online planning tools
Global wedding trends like proposals are gaining popularity in India with 28 per cent of millennials that participated in the survey revealing that there was a formal proposal prior to the wedding by their partner
The Knot Worldwide global Newlywed survey revealed that living together before the wedding is becoming common in India. On a global level, countries like France and Spain rank higher than the US in terms of couples living together
