International Yoga Day 2023: Yoga asanas that can help improve mental health

Every year the world celebrates International Yoga Day on June 21 to create awareness about the importance of yoga for a healthy life. On ninth edition of Yoga Day, here are some yoga poses that help in improving one’s mental health:

International Yoga Day

Balasana, also known as ‘Child’s Pose’ is excellent for mental health as it calms the nerves. In this pose, a person needs to relax their mind and body completely. Just bend your body to the ground while resting the abdomen on your thighs.

The name of this asana itself suggests that it induces happiness and relaxes the mind. The person has to sit in the lotus position and meditate while holding that position. This position helps calm one down from anxiety and stress.

International Yoga Day: Sukhasana

Also known as the ‘Crane’s Pose’, this is a mind relaxing asana where the person engages with his/her mind. To hold this position, one has to concentrate on their arms as the entire pressure of your body is mounted on them. You have to lift your upper body upwards while keeping the lower half of your body down.

International Yoga Day: Bakasana

This asana helps in pumping up energy levels as you pull your body forwards toward the knee and rest it firmly. Rest your abdomen on the thighs and hold this position for 20 seconds.

International Yoga Day: Paschimottanasana

Also called the ‘Wheel Pose’, this asana might seem difficult to do but it is one of the most relaxing yoga poses. This yoga asana involves a lot of muscles at the same time, lay on your back and then lift your body upwards like the arch of a wheel, while keeping the palms and feet touching the ground completely.

International Yoga Day: Chakrasana

Dhanurasan or ‘Bow Pose’ involves a lot of concentration, so, one needs to be highly focused while doing this pose. Lie on your stomach, and lift your feet and palms. Touch your toes with your fingers and hold this position for 20 seconds.

Also known as the ‘Thunderbolt Pose’, Vajrasana is very useful for increasing calmness, focusing and also digestion. Sit on your knees and slowly rest your thighs on the calves. Stretch the ankles outwards and keep the palms on your thighs. Then take deep breaths while maintaining this pose for 30 seconds to a minute.

International Yoga Day: Vajrasana

Also called the ‘Corpse Pose’, this is one of the easiest poses to do. Just lie on your back and stretch your legs out. Now, stretch the arms beside you and keep your palms facing towards the sky. Just listen to the sounds around you and maintain even breathing for 5 minutes.
